Alcohol Ethoxylate (AE) – Versatile Non-Ionic Surfactant for Detergent Industry

Alcohol Ethoxylate (AE) – Versatile Non-Ionic Surfactant for Detergent Industry

Alcohol Ethoxylate (AE) is a class of non-ionic surfactants synthesized by the ethoxylation of fatty alcohols. It is typically a colorless to pale yellow transparent viscous liquid or waxy solid, with adjustable hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) by changing the number of ethylene oxide (EO) groups. As a core auxiliary in detergent formulations, it has excellent emulsifying, wetting, dispersing, and solubilizing properties, and is widely compounded with anionic surfactants (e.g., LABSA, SLES, AOS) to optimize cleaning performance.

Description

Core Advantages

  1. Adjustable HLB Value & Strong Adaptability
By controlling the EO chain length, AE can be tailored to different application scenarios: low EO content (3–5) is suitable for oil emulsification; medium EO content (7–12) has balanced wetting and decontamination ability; high EO content (15–20) is ideal for solubilizing hydrophobic ingredients (e.g., fragrances, preservatives).
  2. Excellent Compatibility & Synergistic Effect
Mixes well with anionic, cationic, and amphoteric surfactants without precipitation or stratification. When compounded with anionic surfactants (e.g., SLES, LABSA), it significantly improves the detergent's hard-water resistance, low-temperature stability, and decontamination efficiency for oil stains.
  3. Mild & Low-Irritation
Compared with anionic surfactants like LAS, AE has lower skin and eye irritation, making it suitable for formulating mild detergents (e.g., baby laundry liquids, sensitive skin cleaners) and personal care products.
  4. Stable Performance in Extreme Conditions
Maintains stable properties in a wide pH range (4–14), and is resistant to acid, alkali, and salt. It performs well in low-temperature environments (no crystallization or stratification) and high-temperature industrial cleaning scenarios.

Typical Application Scenarios

  1. Household Detergents
Used in liquid laundry detergents, dishwashing liquids, and fabric softeners; improves the solubility of the formula, enhances oil stain removal, and reduces irritation to hands.
  2. Industrial Cleaners
Applied in metal degreasers, textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries, and agricultural adjuvants; acts as an emulsifier and wetting agent to enhance the penetration of cleaning agents into dirt.
  3. Personal Care Products
Added to shampoos, body washes, and facial cleansers; balances foaming ability and mildness, and helps solubilize essential oils and fragrances.
